First Vacation

23 Oct

Before Ben received an invitation to interview for his current position (which means before I even knew he applied to a university in Moscow), he was asked to be in the wedding of two very good friends of ours. When he accepted this position, we discussed it with the couple and let them know that we would do what we could to make it back, but we had to take things one day at a time. So, there we were, less than a week before the wedding having to tell them that one of their groomsmen still could not confirm that he would be in the country on the big day. Not only were they not freaking out, but they were apologizing to us for the fact that our visas were not processed yet. This is exactly what makes them the kind of friends worth traveling half way around the world to see. Fortunately, three days before our scheduled flight the visas arrived and we were legally able to return to Moscow once we left.

While we are really excited about the travel opportunities available to us now that we live in Europe, there was something comforting about getting to go back to Irvine for our first vacation. When we left almost two months ago everything happened so fast that we didn’t get to fully appreciate our time with our friends and we ended up leaving without even saying goodbye to some people. While a bit of a whirlwind,  this trip allowed us a little more time with them and also with the place that we called home for so many years. The wedding also brought friends into town who had moved away before we did and it was great to see them again.

So, thank you to everyone who made our first vacation from Moscow an amazing one! Thank you for the shared coffee, beer, milkshakes, and burritos, but most of all thank you for the friendship. We’re back in Moscow for awhile now and I don’t know when we’ll get back to Southern California, but I know that we will be there again.

до свидания!

P.S. We didn’t take too many pictures during the trip because we were too busy trying to squeeze in as much as possible, but we did have some extra time in the Frankfurt airport due to delays/missed connections. Here is how we spent it:
