Venturing Out

28 Aug

Today we planned a trial run on the Metro to find the HSE Administration building where we will have a few bits of paperwork to handle this week.  We figured out where the stations are, how many stops apart they are, and what the station names and streets are in both English as well as the Cyrillic translations.  Working through this preparation gave me a chance to write in Cyrillic by hand and get used to the sounds as they translate to English.  We found our way there with no problems on the Metro and only a bit of trouble with the streets at the destination due to a lack of street signs and a rather large and confusion intersection.  After finding the correct building we wandered around a bit exploring the streets and admiring our new city.

We headed back towards the guesthouse and decided to stop by the mall nearby to pick up a few groceries that we can use in the guesthouse which has a refrigerator, but no stove, oven, or other cooking appliance.  We headed towards Aшан which appears to be a two-story superstore, possibly similar to Super Walmart or Target.  We only went through the grocery section, though.  This store was located in a mall that contained American chains such as T.G.I.Friday’s, Sbarro, Baskin-Robbins, Payless, and Crocs.  While we hope to fully integrate ourselves into the city, it was very comforting that there are so many familiar places during the transition.  We ended up going back to the T.G.I.Friday’s for dinner – using the English on the menu as well as our knowledge of the dishes to help us recognize food-related words.  Our server actually spoke English, too.

Overall, the feeling for today is that we can do this.  It will take time, but we can locate the work-arounds in the mean time and we will figure everything else out one day at a time.

до свидания!
